Background
The World Dance Alliance (WDA) serves as a primary voice for dance throughout the world, encouraging the exchange of ideas and the awareness of dance in all its forms. The Global Summit is an international activity of the World Dance Alliance that brings together specialists from each of the WDA Chapters (Asia/Pacific, Europe and The Americas) to focus, analyse and reflect on the development of dance/arts practice and research in a global context, undertaking choreographic and performance projects, and publishing regularly. Its activities are initiated and realised through five networks: Research & Documentation, Creation & Presentation, Education & Training, Management & Promotion, Welfare & Status.
The conference / performative dialogues component of the WDA Global Summit, to be held at QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct, will explore the following key issues facing culture and the arts in the 21st century:
· mind/body connections
· sustainability
· transcultural conversations
· re-thinking the way we make dance/performance
Presentation formats
Scholarly papers: Submissons may be an abstract of 500 words plus an additional page of bibliographic references or a full paper (3,000 – 5000 words), both of which will be blind refereed. Please refer Styleguide on website.
Panel presentations: Panels may comprise up to 5 speakers, including the panel convener, presenting one topic from diverse viewpoints. Proposals are to be submitted by the convenor in a 500 word abstract which summarises the contribution of each panel member, accompanied by contact details and 100 word biodata of each panel member. An international panel will make a selection based on the quality of the proposal, conceptual clarity and relevance to the conference themes.
Performative presentations: This format is designed to privilege the voice of the practising artist. Proposals should comprise a 500 word summary of the practice to be discussed and performed, together with a 10 minute DVD or VHS excerpt of recent work by the artist. Promotional DVDs will not be considered. If performers are accompanying the choreographer / director, the number, names and a brief description of the individual performers (or group) should be included. An international panel will consider and evaluate proposals based on the quality of the summary and the work submitted. The venue is a ‘black box’ theatre with basic lighting support.
Postgraduate poster presentations: Postgraduate dialogues are a priority of this conference. Proposals should be in the form of a 500 word abstract summarising the topic, methodology and summary of the research to date, with an extra page of contextual / bibliographic references. An academic panel will be convened to consider proposals. If selected, an on-line poster template will be provided.
All modes of presentation require a 500 word abstract in English, and 100 word biodata, plus identification of which of the four issues outlined are most relevant to the topic. Please specify one of the above formats as your preferred choice and submit your proposal on-line as per instructions on the website. Selected papers will form part of the conference proceedings which will be published post-conference. For inquiries please e-mail wdaconference@ausdance.org.au
